Metropolitan Area Census Data: Household and Family statistics

Household and Family statistics for 356 U.S. metropolitan areas are shown in this easy-to-read table and chart combination.

Scroll down for information about Reading the chart.

Source: U.S. Census Bureau 2000 Census.

The metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) are listed alphabetically, with some exceptions. Use this alphabetical index to jump down to the area you are interested in: B   C   D   EFG   HIJK   L   MNO   PR   S   TUVWY   Puerto Rico

Some large MSAs are arranged into two or more Primary MSAs (PMSAs) within a Consolidated MSA (CMSA). In this case the PMSAs are not in alphabetical order, but are grouped under the CMSA. To find a PMSA, check the larger CMSA that it is a part of. For example, the Akron, OH PMSA can be found under the Cleveland/Akron, OH CMSA, along with other MSAs beginning with 'C'. Or, use your browser's Find function (Edit -> Find, or Control-F) to search for these areas. See below for more information about MSAs, CMSAs, and PMSAs.

Reading the Chart:

The chart show statistics for 356 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) as defined by the Census Bureau. See below for definitions. Note that MSAs cover larger areas than city limits. Some of the larger MSAs are arranged as two or more Primary MSAs included in a Consolidated MSA. Note that for the Total households column, the numbers in the PMSA table cells add up the to the total in the corresponding CMSA table cell.

*Puerto Rico is not an MSA but is included here to provide contest for the MSAs it contains.

The entries under the Percent of total households headings are percentages. The "Family households Total" and "Nonfamily households Total" percentages add up to approximately 100%. The subheadings underneath do not add up to 100%, because they do not include all the types of households. For example, there is no subheading for "Male householder, no wife present.". The colored bars fill the cells in proportion to the percentage value.

The entries under the Average population per- heading are averages of the number of people in each family or household. Here the colored bars indicate a percentage of an arbitrary maximum (5). For example, the colored bar for an average family size of 2.5 fills half of the table cell.

Total Households counts households, not people. Here the colored bars represent percentages of the highest household count of any metropolitan area. For example, the MSA with the highest population (namely New York) has a colored bar that fills the cell. An MSA with half that many people will have a colored bar that fills half the cell. For small percentages the bar does not appear.

Please note that if you set your browser to display very large text sizes, the table cell sizes will change, and the lengths of the colored bars will not be accurate, although they will still show proportions.

Census Department definitions:

The general concept of a metropolitan area (MA) is one of a large population nucleus, together with adjacent communities that have a high degree of economic and social integration with that nucleus. Some MAs are defined around two or more nuclei.
Metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) are metropolitan areas (MAs) that are not closely associated with other MAs. These areas typically are surrounded by nonmetropolitan counties (county subdivisions in New England).
If an area that qualifies as a metropolitan area (MA) has 1 million people or more, two or more primary metropolitan statistical areas (PMSAs) may be defined within it. Each PMSA consists of a large urbanized county or cluster of counties (cities and towns in New England) that demonstrate very strong internal economic and social links, in addition to close ties to other portions of the larger area. When PMSAs are established, the larger MA of which they are component parts is designated a consolidated metropolitan statistical area (CMSA). CMSAs and PMSAs are established only where local governments favor such designations for a large MA.
A household includes all of the people who occupy a housing unit. A housing unit is a house, an apartment, a mobile home, a group of rooms, or a single room occupied (or if vacant, intended for occupancy) as separate living quarters.
A family includes a householder and one or more other people living in the same household who are related to the householder by birth, marriage, or adoption.
